True lavender, also known as common lavender or fine lavender, is a subshrub with blue-violet hues. Very common in the Mediterranean basin, at altitudes over 1,000 meters, true lavender has also been cultivated for some years in Bulgaria, China, Ukraine, and Canada. It was once used to clean and perfume Greek and Roman baths, hence its etymology (lavare = to wash).
