The Cistus is a shrub from the Mediterranean basin growing on dry and rocky garrigue. Its small 5-petaled white, pink, or red flowers appear crumpled and only bloom for one day. In ancient times, the Greeks harvested its flowers to make a sap called ladanum (hence the name gum rockrose) which they used in perfumery but also in pharmacology. The powerful scent of Cistus is still used in perfumes today.
It is not from the flowers but from the branches of Cistus ladaniferus L., steam distilled, that Cistus essential oil is extracted. This pure and natural essence releases a characteristic fragrance that is both woody and spicy.
