Discovered in Rome in the 16th century, Roman or noble Chamomile then took the name Roman Chamomile. It subsequently spread widely throughout Europe. From the Greek "Khamai" meaning "on the ground" and "Melon" meaning "apple", Chamomile gets its name from the slightly fruity scent exhaled by its flowers.
